Since founding Darby Architects, P.C. in 2005, Ann Darby, AIA, LEED-AP serves her clients by integrating environmentally friendly thinking for custom residential, remodel, and interior design projects. Her ideas begin with a respect for the land, climate, and culture and evolve into designs that embrace old and new and connect people to place. While most of her work represents the residential market, she is qualified to contribute to a greener community by applying environmentally responsible design to various development opportunities.

Ann began her professional career designing corporate interiors in Chicago and developed a passion for resort mountain architecture after relocating to Colorado in 1995. Her experience working for firms in Vail and Aspen allowed her to collaborate on award-winning architecture. She donates her time serving the community on several design review committees as well as to local nonprofit organizations, where sharing her compassion for children and the great outdoors are involved.

Ms. Darby earned a Bachelor of Architecture in 1989 and a Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois in 1994. During her Masters program, she assisted in teaching students in a design studio as well as supported the faculty with computer technology. She was an intern architect at Skidmore Owings and Merrill and Larson and Darby in Chicago prior to moving to Vail, Colorado, in 1995.

AAt Darby Architects, we believe in a fine balance between work and play in the Rocky Mountains surrounding Vail, Colorado. In addition to recreation, we strive to develop individual growth through arts, education, travel and culture as well as contribute our time and resources through community involvement. This continued learning allows us to be better architects and stewards of our mountain environment.
Darby Architects believes in fostering an interactive environment with our clients in which ideas, project goals, and values are shared. We believe that this collaborative approach of creative exploration and communication supports the quality of the end-result.

We initiate our projects with an on-site meeting where we walk the land, gain an understanding of our clients’ connection to the place, and develop a design concept integrating the program to the site. This concept evolves as we continue to refine the design through creative exploration, team interaction, approvals, and budget reviews prior to construction. During this process, we present the design in a digital 3D model, allowing the owner to visualize their home by realizing the boundaries between interior and exterior.

The result is an architecture that responds to its site, shapes our experiences, and builds long-lasting relationships.

Located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, we are passionate about preserving the natural environment and recognize that sustainable design is one of the most important issues influencing architecture today. Not only does our firm embrace sustainability in its practice, but also attracts clients who value the performance of their buildings. We openly discuss the objectives of designing responsibly and living appropriately with our clients, where together we can establish priorities and commit to expectations. From single-family homes to rural barn structures, we strive to create energy-efficient and environmentally conservative buildings. Our designs typically include passive solar orientation, systems to reduce the heating and cooling loads, and the use of building materials that are healthy to the environment and the people who inhabit them.
